The vascular health screen is our most popular service. It consists of a general vascular health consultation as part of which a coronary calcium scan is ordered and interpreted, and a CIMT ultrasound test is performed. Those tests are then evaluated in light of your medical history plus any recent blood tests you may have had, and a recommendation is made to ensure optimal vascular health. NOTE: The fee for the coronary calcium scan is not included in the vascular health screen and must be paid separately to the scanning facility (typically $150-400 in the Bay Area, depending on the location).

A vascular health screen is an excellent way to determine if you have plaque building up in you arteries. In conjunction with other factors like family history, lipid levels, diabetes, or blood pressure, the vascular health screen can help decide if lifestyle changes or medications are advisable to reduce the possibility of a future cardiac event.

The vascular health screen typically starts with a brief intake interview with our physician. Following this, the coronary calcium scan is ordered at a facility most appropriate and convenient for you. Once the scan results are obtained, the in-office visit at Athletic Heart SF is scheduled. That is when the consultation is provided, the CIMT carotid ultrasound scan is performed, and the coronary calcium scan images are reviewed and interpreted in light of your medical history and recent blood tests.

The coronary calcium scan is not performed at Athletic Heart SF. It is ordered for you prior to your visit and can be obtained at any one of several scanning facilities in the area. When you call to schedule you vascular health screen we determine which facility is most appropriate for you.

The vascular health screen visit in our office takes about 45 minutes. This includes the completion of the carotid ultrasound and the consultation with our physician. The coronary calcium scan itself typically takes only a few minutes, but you should estimate a total of 30 minutes for the scan visit (see section above).

There is usually no preparation needed but the facility performing the coronary calcium scan will give you additional instructions.​​​​​

The vascular health screen ($460) includes the consultation, CIMT carotid ultrasound, and review and interpretation of the coronary calcium scan. The fee for the coronary calcium scan is not included and must be paid separately to the scanning facility. Depending on which facility performs the scan, the cost for a coronary calcium scan is usually between $150-400 in the SF Bay Area.

We kindly request full payment on the day of testing. This allows us to keep our fees as low as possible. We accept cash and all major credit cards. Payments may also be drawn from HSA accounts.

Our cancellation fees are:​

• $65 for cancellations within 12 to 48 hours prior to the scheduled time of your visit.

• $95 for cancellations less than 12 hours prior to the scheduled time of your visit.

We are "out of network" with all insurance plans but will gladly provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Please be advised that the amount you can expect to be reimbursed, if any, depends on the specific terms of your plan. Medicare beneficiaries should not expect any reimbursement from Medicare or supplemental plans.
